Simply Curves in Photoshop

1. Duplicate your image and crop to the dimensions and resolution required for the end product.

2. Have the layers palette on screen. (F7)

3. The curves palette can be opened in three ways. Image/Adjustment/curves. Ctl+m. By creating an adjustment layer.

4. The preferred method is by using a curves adjustment layer. The reason being that the image can be re-adjusted at a later date without destroying any subsequent alterations.

5. Click on the half black/half white icon at the bottom of the layers palette. In the drop down menu click 'curves

6.  In the  curves palette click on the 'Dark' colour picker (L.H.S.) and move the curser onto the darkest part of the image and click. Then click on the 'Light' colour picker and move the curser on to the lightest part of the image and click.

7. You now have an image with a complete range of shades from black to white.

8 If the image had a colour cast it is possible that it has now disappeared.

9. If it is still there select the midtones colour picker and click on the midtones of the image until the result is satisfactory.

10. The last step is to put anchor points on the curve to form the slight S curve as shown.

11. Remember that if you wish to reset the curve, holding down the Alt key changes the 'Cancel; button to 'Reset'.
